HOW TO ADD PERSONALITY TO A BATHROOM (WITHOUT REFURBISHING IT)

Jonathan Ryan Forde • Apr 16, 2019

When it comes to interior design, often the bathroom is the most expensive room to refurbish. There’s plumbing, tiles, new fittings and labour costs to contend with so for many people, this requires years of saving and planning. Or perhaps you live in rented accommodation and just don’t love your current bathroom. In both of these scenarios, an easy way to get on board with your current bathroom is with a quick restyle, rather than a total makeover. Thankfully, we’re here to help. Add a splash of personality and colour to your bathroom with these easy, budget-friendly ways to turn your bathroom into a room that you love.

Add the illusion of space with a mirror

A mirror is one of those must-have accessories in a bathroom but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring. Make it a focal point by choosing one with tons of drama. Plus, a clever top tip is to hang it opposite a window, if possible. The mirror will reflect the light and create the illusion of space, making your bathroom appear bigger than it is.

Update your accessories

Usually the cheapest and easiest way to refresh a bathroom is to update your current accessories. Not only will these help tidy the room’s contents, but they’ll add a decorative touch. Plus, if you have a chosen colour scheme in mind, use these accessories to add cohesion and tie everything together. If colour isn’t for you, look to more modern, minimalist accessories with, for example a marble effect for a chic finish with just a touch of personality.

Upgrade your towels

We’re probably all a little guilty of hoarding old, tired towels so use this opportunity to ditch them in favour of a fresh set of fluffy towels. Choose patterns or colours, which reflect your colour scheme and store them neatly or hang on a towel rail.

Refresh your bathmat

With these getting soaked on a daily basis, it doesn’t take long for our bathmats to need replacing. Add a touch of luxury to your room with a plush mat, which bridges the gap between practicality and style. Look at what space you have to determine whether a circular or square mat work work best.

Storage is key

One of the best, low cost upgrades you can make to a bathroom is to get on board with storage. While all those toiletries may be necessary, keeping them out in the open instantly makes a room look messy. Keep your bathroom clutter-free by introducing shelving, cabinets or baskets – choosing whichever works best for your space. A shower caddie is also worth adding inside your shower to keep stray shampoo bottles neatly contained.

Add a touch of luxury

Just like any room in the house, finishing touches are key. Whether it’s adding a plant or two or getting on board with luxurious candles, choose accessories which reflect the theme you wish to portray.
