Interior Design Tips for Children's Bedrooms

Decorating a child’s bedroom can be so exciting. It allows the opportunity to really get creative with your interior design, but one thing to remember, is that great interior design should be timeless. If you’re not sure where to start, don’t panic! Here, we share our top tips for creating a chic but cool child’s bedroom.

Avoid strong interior design themes

Designing a child’s bedroom can be an amazing experience, but it can also prove a little tricky. There is the temptation to create a fairy tale inspired nursery, but before you know it, it’s outdated and your little one will be telling you how they want it. There will be cries for unicorns or dinosaurs and while this can be lovely, the truth is, they’ll outgrown it quickly, and you’ll find yourself re-wallpapering each year.

Colour is the key to great interior design

When it comes to decorating a child’s bedroom, avoid strong themes where possible and opt for more neutral colours which will stand the test of time. Picking a neutral colour for walls will serve as the perfect blank canvas for decorative accessories. Use these to add oodles of your child’s personality and interests, which can be easily updated as tastes and trends change. If you are set on using colour, add this to the ceiling or introduce a feature wall as a way around this.

Set yourself up with storage

Any well organised room boasts oodles of storage and its importance is vital in a child’s bedroom. The perfect devises for de-cluttering the floor of toys, choose storage boxes which match your needs. Nowadays there are a wealth of amazing options on the market. No longer confined to ugly plastic boxes, choose between linen and wood for a chic look, or have something custom made for a bespoke finish.

Find feature furniture

No room is complete without a piece of feature furniture and this definitely applies in a child’s room. Whether it’s a unique bed frame, antique wardrobe or one-of-a-kind storage chest, find a piece which brings the room to life.

Adorn the walls with art

As your child’s tastes will undoubtedly change over the years, adding framed prints to the walls is a great way to keep up. A fabulous method of bringing visual interest to a room, adorning the walls with art is also a clever way to establish a colour scheme and give a room coherence. Choose pops of colour which are reflected in soft furnishings such as carpet, curtains or bedding to finish the room off to perfection.

Alluring accessories

If you’ve decided to keep the walls plain, bunting, vinyl stickers or hanging accessories are ideal, as they can be easily swapped as your child’s interests change.

Add light

Don’t neglect the importance of lighting in your child’s bedroom. Adding a little ambient lighting is great for pre-bedtime story reading, helping ease your child off to sleep. Twinkly fairy lights will add ambiance, bedside lamps encourage reading and lampshades on ceilings serve as a focal point in a room. Nodding off to sleep under low lighting helps offer reassurance for the child, encouraging a peaceful night ahead.

Create cosy corners

Your child’s bedroom should be a space they can call their own and carving out cosy corners will help ensure they can relax, study and play here. Add definition to a space thanks to the addition of beanbags, a tipi or a hanging chair, which also serves as a great feature for the room.
