If you’ve spent hours lusting after kitchens on Pinterest, you may have noticed that despite their different styles, they all have one thing in common – sparkling, clutter-free surfaces. Believe it or not, keeping a kitchen tidy and devoid of all unnecessary items is the key to ensuring it looks pretty. In fact, at Home and Contract Design, our top interior design recommendation would be to keep 90 per cent of the surface clear.
To help shape up your kitchen, here are our easy tricks to keep it clutter-free.
Opt for a smaller coffee maker
Is a big bulky coffee maker taking up room in the corner? Unless you have a household of coffee-drinking adults who need their morning fix, downsize and opt for a French press or pour-over option. Both make great coffee and look undeniably chic. Or, if you just can’t ditch the electric machine, vow to remove something else. And remember to at least store your coffee beans in the cupboard.
Rethink
your toaster
The same goes for your toaster. If it’s guilty of taking up too much space, consider whether you really need it. Most grills do a great job of toasting. But, if you just can’t part with it, find a cupboard to store it in when not in use.
Ditch the dumping ground
Most of us are guilty of having that ‘dumping ground’, where mail, keys, receipts and magazines reside. It’s messy, disorganised and looks unsightly. Of course, the content needs a home, but it shouldn’t live on your kitchen counters. Instead, choose to store it in an office or suitable cupboard.
Consider your kitchen roll
It’s big and bulky, so turn your attention to your kitchen roll. Could this be wall mounted, or hung discreetly underneath a cabinet? If not, go green and paperless, by switching to chic tea towels and other reusable cleaning solutions, which can be stored underneath your sink as well.
Make use of canisters
Packaging can be distracting to the eye and unintentionally clutters worktops. In this instance, we recommend adding to your worktops, through the use of pretty canisters. Choose ones which convey the theme of your kitchen, adding to its prettiness in the process.
Store your spices
A spice rack is the perfect way to store your spices stylishly away, so if you haven’t already done so, invest in one. This will allow you to keep unsightly containers out of site and your spices to hand when cooking.
Choose uniform utensils
If your kitchen utensils must be on display, make them a focal point. Choose, matching utensils, which reflect your colour scheme and store them in a pretty canister.
Keep sponges under the sink
Have you ever seen a sponge grace the pages of an interior design magazine? The answer is most definitely no. Let’s face it… sponges are unsightly to say the least. If you have under sink storage, use it. It’s the easiest way to keep the sink area clutter-free.
Re-home your cookbooks
While we love cook books in the kitchen, it shouldn’t resemble a library. If you can’t store them away, stack them neatly on a windowsill or shelf. That way, they’ll always be to hand without causing chaos.
