HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOME INTERIOR DESIGN COSIER FOR AUTUMN

Jonathan Ryan Forde • Oct 05, 2018

And just like that, autumn has arrived! With the shorter days and darker nights, you may have started thinking about how to make your home cosier for the new season. Now is the perfect time to get started on those projects you kept putting off during the summer months because it was too nice to be indoors.

And if you’re in need of a little inspiration, we’re here to help. Here, we share our top tips on making your home a sanctuary of cosiness this season.

Create a cosy corner

With much more time usually spent indoors during autumn, you’ll want a corner that you can retire to and call your own. Autumn brings with it a drop in temperature and a desire to be cosy so creating your own little nook will offer you respite from the unsettling elements. The season is typically a little dark and dreary and your home definitely shouldn’t match this feeling so infuse a little colour into it. You don’t have to go for cliché colours such as reds and metallics either. Add pops of colours with plenty of warmth such as teals and greens. Next, position your favourite chair near a window, and surround yourself with things that inspire you. Whether it’s a bookcase housing your autumnal reads or a feature wall with your favourite photography, this corner should be always-inviting.

Prepare for candlelit dinners

While barbecue season might be over, that doesn’t mean you can’t use your home for entertaining. Use rich colours and textures to create an atmosphere of opulence in your dining room. Combine dark mahogany woods with pops of colour for the perfect finish. Add plenty of candles and low lighting to treat guests to a fine-dining inspired experience.

Make your bedroom an oasis of calm

Your bedroom should be one of your favourite rooms in your home. You should want to retire to it each night, which is easily achieved with the correct décor. Swap summer’s whites and pastel hues for season-appropriate navys. If this sounds altogether too dark, combine it with floral prints for a twist. Upgrade your beside lamp and add in a scented candle. Finally, use some faux fur throws for a chic and cosy finish.

Update your soft furnishings

One of the easiest ways to update your home is by changing your soft furnishings. From swapping your cushions to changing your curtains, these small gestures can have a big impact. If it isn’t in your budget to completely redecorate, this is a perfect option. Work with your home’s existing colour scheme and choose new soft furnishings which complement it.

Look to the Danish

If you haven’t heard of hygge yet, it’s time to get on board. When it comes to making your home cosier for autumn, look to the Danish for delightful inspiration. Hygge is all about creating a feeling or an experience, which is centered around cosiness. Whether it’s lighting the fire and settling on the sofa with a good book, or baking some delicious bread in the kitchen that you love, the Danes really know how to do it. So with this is mind, think about how you’d like to inject a sense of cosiness into your home this season.
